Know which method fits
before you design the study.
Case study research bounds itself to one context and studies it in depth. Narrative research follows how people tell the story of their experience. Both start as hours of interviews, and Speak AI helps you transcribe, code, and defend either approach with the transcript as evidence.

Case study and narrative coding for every kind of researcher.
The same coding engine, pointed at the interviews and cases your team actually has.
Thesis & dissertation coding
Keep case boundaries and narrative arcs straight across dozens of interviews, with every code traceable to a quote.
Usability & discovery studies
Code sessions as bounded cases or participant narratives, then compare themes across the whole study.
Client-facing case work
Turn raw interviews into a case narrative or cross-case comparison a client can act on, not just a transcript.
Methods chapter support
Defend your case study or narrative inquiry design with a coded, auditable transcript trail behind every claim.
Evaluation & impact studies
Bound each site or cohort as its own case, or follow individual participant stories, on the same platform.
Life story & narrative work

A different approach to case study vs. narrative research.
Case study research and narrative research are both qualitative approaches built on the same raw material: interviews, observations, and documents. The difference is what you do with them. A case study bounds itself to a context, a program, an organization, a single site, and studies that context in depth, often pulling in multiple sources of evidence to triangulate a finding. Narrative research follows how a person makes sense of their own experience, structured as a story with a beginning, turning points, and an ending, and analyzed for that structure as much as for its content.
Why the line gets blurry
The confusion is not really about definitions. It is about what happens once the interviews are done. A researcher sits down with twelve transcripts from the same nonprofit and has to decide, by hand, whether this is one case with twelve data sources or twelve separate stories. Get the boundary wrong and the analysis wobbles: cross-participant themes get treated as personal narrative arcs, or a genuinely individual story gets flattened into a generic organizational finding. Most methods texts group case studies into four broad types: descriptive, exploratory, explanatory, and intrinsic, a single case studied for its own sake rather than to build theory. Narrative inquiry does not sort as neatly. A typical example follows one person, a teacher moving into a new role, a patient managing a diagnosis, through in-depth interviews, then analyzes how they structure that transition as a story: what changed, when, and what it meant to them.
Reading the transcript for method, not just words
Speak AI transcribes every interview in your language, with 100+ supported, and then reads the recording itself: the tone and pacing of the account, where a participant's energy shifts, the moments that sound like a turning point versus a routine detail. That distinction matters for narrative coding specifically, since a story's meaning often sits in how something was told, not only in what was said. For case study work, the same transcripts get tagged by site, participant role, and data source, so cross-case comparison stays organized instead of scattered across folders and file names.
Then you can ask questions across the whole project with AI chat, using the same coding logic a research team would apply by hand, now running natively over every transcript with ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini built in.
Case study or narrative inquiry: the actual differences
- Focus: a case study bounds itself to a context, a program, an organization, a site. Narrative research bounds itself to a person's account of their experience.
- Data: case studies typically triangulate interviews, documents, and observation across a bounded case. Narrative research relies mainly on first-person interviews and the stories people tell.
- Analysis: case studies compare within and across cases for patterns. Narrative research analyzes plot, sequence, and turning points to find how meaning gets constructed.
- Output: a case study produces a context-rich account of one bounded situation. Narrative research produces an account of how someone experienced and now tells that situation.
From twelve transcripts to a defensible method
The result is a coding pass you can actually defend in a methods chapter or a client deliverable: every code traceable to a quote, every case boundary or narrative arc documented instead of remembered. Trends across a full project become a report instead of a hunch, and instrumentbord du kan tilpasse og white-label track theme frequency and case comparisons over time, so this round of interviews is measured against the last one. A global market research firm put its multi-country qualitative interviews through this workflow and saved $60K+ and 950+ hours, shifting analyst time back to interpretation instead of administrative coding.
And because the same engine reads case documents, narrative interviews, and everyday conversations on the same platform, you can query all of it, or hand it to an AI assistant through the MCP server, without switching tools between methods.

A case study bounds itself to a context, a program, an organization, a single site, and studies it in depth using multiple sources of evidence. Narrative inquiry follows how one person or a small group makes sense of their own experience, structured and analyzed as a story with a sequence and turning points.
A study that follows one teacher through in-depth interviews as she moves into a new role, then analyzes how she structures that transition as a story, what changed, when, and what it meant to her, rather than treating her answers as isolated data points.
Most methods texts group case studies into descriptive, exploratory, explanatory, and intrinsic, a single case studied for its own sake rather than to build theory. Multiple-case (collective) designs extend any of these across more than one bounded case for comparison.
In practice the terms are used interchangeably. Where a distinction is drawn, narrative inquiry usually refers to the broader methodological approach, treating experience itself as story, while narrative research is used more generally for any study that collects and analyzes people's stories as data.
